Stop Regenerating, Start Editing: A Smarter Way to Fix AI Images
Ever asked an AI for a "simple diagram" and got something that's 80% brilliant and 20% baffling? Same. Here's how I stopped starting over from scratch every time — and started editing instead.
The first time an AI tool spat out a genuinely nice-looking diagram for something I was working on, I was thrilled. Then I actually read it properly — the way you do when you're checking it's actually good enough to use — and noticed the bit at the bottom wasn't quite saying what I wanted. My old instinct was to bin it and try a whole new prompt. That's slow, and honestly a bit soul-destroying when you've already got 90% of a great resource sitting right there.
So while putting together a diagram explaining automatic data capture, I tried something different: build the image in stages, work out which bit isn't pulling its weight, fix only that bit, tidy up the empty space, and keep nudging individual shapes until it's right. It worked so well I've used it for pretty much every AI-generated image since.
Think of it like editing, not writing
Here's the mindset shift that made the biggest difference for me: stop treating AI image generation like a one-shot task, and start treating it like editing a document or slide you've already built. You wouldn't rebuild an entire slide because one bullet point was wrong — you'd just fix the bullet point. Same idea here: generate, review it properly, spot the weak bit, fix that bit, repeat.
Step 1
Decide what you actually want the image to communicate first
Before you type a single word into the AI, get really clear on the one thing you want the image to communicate. For this example, it was: automatic data capture is hardware reading data straight from its source and passing it to the computer. That's it. That's the whole point of the image.
That one sentence gave the AI an actual sequence to draw: a barcode became the data source, a scanner became the ADC hardware, and a laptop showed where the data landed. Compare that to asking for “a picture about data capture” — which is a bit like asking someone to “write something about it” and hoping for the best. Give the image a job, not a vibe.
Step 2
Bolt the next idea on separately
Once that clicked, the next thing that needed explaining was why a business would bother with ADC at all, given it costs more to set up. So rather than cramming that into my first prompt and hoping for a miracle, I asked for it as its own addition underneath.
The information in that bottom section was right, but it just didn't look right yet. Old me would've deleted the whole thing and started again. New me opened the editor instead.
Step 3
Only touch the part that's annoying you
This is the bit I wish someone had told me sooner: you can be really specific about what you want changed. If the top half of your image is doing exactly what you need and only the bottom half is off, there's no rule that says you have to regenerate the whole thing.
Short, blunt, and it works. It also means the AI isn't given the chance to quietly mess with the bit you'd already got right — which, if you've ever had a "fixed" version come back worse than the original, you'll appreciate.
Step 4
Crop out the annoying bit and deal with it on its own
Sometimes it helps to physically crop the troublesome section out and treat it as its own little project, especially when your diagram has a few separate panels or shapes going on.
Because if you already like 80–90% of an image, editing the remaining sliver is nearly always faster — and gives you a more consistent result — than crossing your fingers and starting over.
Step 5
Zoom in on the tiny stuff too
Sometimes the problem isn't a whole section, it's three little shapes. I selected just the coins, the "high volume" panel and the "high accuracy" panel, and asked for those specifically to be redrawn.

Get rid of the awkward gaps
AI editors love to leave a bit too much breathing room around your image. Fine on a big screen, less fine when you shrink it onto a PowerPoint slide or a website and it suddenly looks tiny and lost.
Sometimes a plain crop will do it. Other times, letting the editor rebuild the whole composition without the dead space gives you a much better-proportioned result.
Step 7
By this point, you barely need to say anything
Once the main design exists, your prompts can get almost lazily short — the image itself is doing most of the explaining for you:
- “Remove the selected area.”
- “Redraw just the bottom half.”
- “Remove the white space at the top.”
- “Redraw this shape.”
- “Keep the rest of the image unchanged.”
Step 8
Read it like you're marking it
This is the one I'd never skip. However good the layout looks, the AI can still slip in a spelling mistake, a wrong number, a currency symbol that doesn't exist, or an arrow pointing the wrong way — and thirty pairs of eyes will spot it before you do if you don't catch it first.
- Read every word and label properly — don't just skim it.
- Check the numbers, examples and currency symbols actually make sense.
- Make sure arrows point the way the data actually flows.
- Cut anything that's just decoration and doesn't help the explanation.
- If one picture is trying to explain three ideas, that's your cue to split it into three.
Step 9
Don't dump the whole thing on your audience at once
A gorgeous, detailed AI image can actually work against you — if there's too much going on, your audience won't know where to look. I'd rather reveal one idea at a time than impress anyone with a single busy graphic.
For this example, that meant splitting it into a sequence: the data source, then the scanning hardware, then the computer receiving it, then the cost–benefit decision at the end. Each one gets its own slide, or its own reveal with a bit of animation.
My rule of thumb: if an image is trying to explain more than one idea, either split it up or reveal it gradually. The picture's job is to back up what you're saying, not compete with it.
Step 10
The cheat sheet, for whenever you need it

The bit I actually want you to take away
I'm not handing the work over to the AI. I'm using it the same way I'd use any editing tool — generate something, look at it properly, work out what's not working, fix just that, and check it again. It's a bit more effort than accepting the first thing it gives you, but it's still miles faster than starting from a blank page every time, and you end up with something you'd actually be happy to use.
If you try this out, save a clean final copy for your slides or website — and hang onto the earlier drafts for a bit, just in case you change your mind about which version you prefer.
